New Moon Calendar 2024 — In 2024, there will be 13 new moons. The year has a black moon, two solar eclipses, and five new supermoons.

The four primary lunar phases are the new moon, the first quarter, the full moon, and the last quarter. The lunar month last approximately a month or 29.53 days on average, also called a synodic month.

A new moon is the first lunar phase. The moon itself is not visible, though you may be able to “see” it because it blocks the visibility of the stars behind it. A full moon occurs when the Earth is directly between the Sun and the Moon, allowing the moon to appear illuminated entirely. The first quarter moon occurs between the new moon and the full moon, and the last quarter moon occurs after the full moon and before the next new moon.

In 2024, there will be 13 new moons with the first on Thursday, January 11 and the last on Monday, December 30. December will have a Black Moon. April had a Total Solar Eclipse that was visible in part of the United States. October will have an Annular Solar Eclipse.

The next new moon is on Wednesday, October 2, 2024 at 2:49 p.m. As the start of the lunar cycle for the October Full Moon, it will be called the New Hunter’s Moon. The October New Moon is the first new moon of Autumn and is the New Moon in Libra.

The new moons get their name from the full moon names each new moon is associated with. Sometimes the new moon is in the same month as its full moon, while in others it’s in the month prior.

Black Moon

In 2024 there will be a black moon on Monday December 30 because December will have two new moons. The second new moon in a month is considered a black moon by one of the definitions.

There are four potential definitions for a black moon, though all unofficial. As a result, it’s not rare to have a black moon in a year. It’s not possible to have all four in one year.

A season with four new moons, making the third a seasonal black moon

Because February has either 28 or 29 days, it’s the only calendar month that may not have both a new moon and a full moon in a given year.
